Cosa fare a Milano - What to do

Ettore Pasculli and I due Inferni

Evening dedicated to cinema at the Dante Festival Lecco. Thanks to the collaboration and cultural commitment of the Fai Delegation of Lecco, the festival has the honor of
presenting a film that has entered the history of cinema and a director who has brought it back to life.

On Thursday 16 September at 9 pm, in collaboration with the Provincia di Lecco which offered the space of the Sala Ticozzi (Via Ongania, 4), the film L'Inferno shot in 1911 by Giuseppe Berardi and Arturo Busnengo with the intent to tell “how much of real interest can be projected to the
public” of the Comedy. The operation, carried out by the production company Helios, succeeded perfectly and the film was very successful in Italy, France, Spain, Great Britain, Hungary and the United States.

It took only four months to make the film, a race against time to beat the production of Milano Film which in the same period was shooting another “Inferno” directed by Francesco Bertolini and Adolfo Padovan.

There were therefore two cinematographic productions on Dante's Inferno in the year 1911, which gave rise to a real “fight against poison” between the two production companies, but which represented also the highest moment for the diffusion of Italian cinema in the world.

While the Milanese production, with the scenes shot in the surroundings of Lecco, in particular in Mandello del Lario, has been repeatedly proposed to the public, the Roman film remained for years in the archives of the Vatican Film Library. Thanks to the intervention of the artistic director and director Ettore Pasculli it was finally
restored and presented at the Venice Film Biennale in 2004.

A unique opportunity to attend the screening of what has been defined as one of the first special effects blockbusters, the pearl of silent cinema. And Pasculli himself will present the film and reveal the intriguing and fascinating anecdotes and events that have accompanied the history of this fundamental stage in the history of silent cinema and filmography inspired by the “Comedy”, the race for living photographs after the invention of the Lumiere Brothers, the innovations that followed one another in the era.
